Hello, watchers! How are you all???

Life is pretty crazy and I was serious when I said I was going to take whatever the Dragon Year would give me in 2012. A lot of things going on an many many projects!

Happily I got a lot of commissions for cool stuff this year, and I'm almost finishing them all. The comic book I was making during the past 2 years (maybe more) is finally done and waiting for printing, so even if it has caused me a lot of pain in the process I'm pretty happy and excited about it.

A new illustration book is coming, it's about faeries and I'll try to finish it untill the end of the year. I wrote it  and one of my former students made the illustrations (and I have to paint it). But I have to run to get it done soon.

I've also got a proposal to illustrate another book, a digital book, which I intend to start soon too!!! \o/ And don't forget about the model series: I had to take a rest from it for a while, but it's not finished yet!

Soon you're going to see my piece to the association "Nuova Officina Onlus", they are going to hold an exhibition on January of 2013 for the "Day of Memory" – an event to remember the terror of Auschwitz. It will happen in the Archeological Museum of Sarno, in Italy. The exhibition is called "I bambini della Shoah" (it means "Children of the Holocaust").

And along with all this I'm preparing myself to be a mom (maybe the hardest part!!!! lol)! Yes yes, Dragon gave me a little boy! Lol, actually, *MarcFerreira gave me a boy.... But he is going to be born in the end of January (probably), so he will be a little dragon himself. Pretty exciting!

Hope you all like the news, see you around!

::..When life get you stucked..::

Sometimes life can really work against you.

These days I'm felling like that. In a way it's almost my fault, in the other it's just life doing its thig.
I'm into a series of projects and they are all stucked. I love developing projects, my mind is always travelling and searching for new challanges and that can be a bit annoying, 'cause sometimes I can't deal with all projects.

I'm in the middle of a graphic novel project for the european market, and it was going quite good: I had an editor, I had time, I had all tools I needed. But then I made a very bad choice about the penciler with who I was going to work. The guy doesn't do the pencils. Simple like that. We are going to miss the deadline and I'm so pissed of I can even tell you.

FIRST TIP: choose wisely the ones you'll work with. It's not in your hands your reputation, but in theirs too.

Then I have a child's book project with another penciler. It was also going fine, but it suddenly got stucked. I just forgot about it and also did the penciler.

SECOND TIP: Focus. It's the most important thing, I guess. Use a notebook to note deadlines and ideas if you fell you're going to miss something. But keep the goal always in mind.

The other projects are doing fine but too slow due to life itself: you gotta prepare lunch, dinner, do the ironing, cleaning, do comissions... And I also have a Art School to run, which is going through a renovation now - and I hate it - and I have to deal with all that. In the end of the day I'm just dead to grab a pencil. It annoys me 'cause I LOVE to draw. I love to create. And I all I can do now is to write down my ideas and wait to have some time to bring them to life. People can say wathever they want, but YES, money is an issue. Money buy your food, pay your rent and bills. It's not something you cannot worry about.

THRID TIP: do your stuff in a particular order. Start with the things you HAVE to do, worry about things you HAVE to worry and leave the others for tomorrow. If you can do one thing at the time it's already good. "Patience" is the word here.

The year of the DRagon is being unmerciful with me. I knew it was going to be like this and I said I was going to accept things the Dragon way... A little bit hard, though.

FORTH TIP: insist. Be a stubborn and persist. It's the only way we can succeed sometimes.

WEll, it was more an otflow than a meaning journal, but I hope that you can learn something from my despare and also I can follow my own tips and get rid of all these weight in my back.

Last week we had a very interesting conversation in the classrom: do you need a college degree to be an artist?
We talked a lot about that and here are my humble opinion, having in mind I'm an artist, I teach Art and I own an Art School.

Being an artist is much more than skills. You have to master three things: tecnique (form), concept (content) and vision.

Tecnique
This is something art school/college can definitely  teach you. If you're wishing to attend art classes, this is something you should expect to see. Oil, acrylics, pastels, pencil, charcoal, watercolour - name it. There are so many things you can lear from teacher - and other students- I can't even tell you.
Besides materials, you will be in touch with a bunch of styles, ways and directions to go. Composition, design.
A good art school or college can show you the way to express yourself in many different manners, showing you new ways to do old things.
Besides a lot of people say, tecnique is important for every artist, no exception. Picasso studied tecnique and drawing as also Miró did. In some point of their carrers they felt the need of  deconstruct all the things they had learned, but the truth is that they only could do that because they learn, let's say, the "classic" way before. Otherwise there was nothing to deconstruct.

Concept
That can also be learned in art school and college, at some levels, I'd say.
Art History: yes, dear student, you have to learn it. Yes, it is important for your formation, for you to learn about Art.
But sometimes college can be really tiring about concept: every single piece has to have something behind it. And that's not true. Sometimes I do a piece only because I think it's a pretty subject or I use the prussian blue with the gold yellow by chance, or because I feel it's nice. I don't want necessarily to make an impression or cause some kind of reponse from the audience. Sometimes I just want to paint.
In that case college can be very demanding and it creates a wave of fake explanations about pieces that wouldn't be necessary. Sometimes even freak explanations. So I'd be very carefull about that. Some say you have to base your work on someone's work, you have to use references, even literature reference. It doesn't make any sense to me. An artist creates. How can you be encouraged/forced to use references? In that case the formal study of Art has lost itself, I believe. In the need to be recognized like Med school or Law school, Art College lost the essence of their subject and tries to document, rule and classify everything.

Vision
You can translate vision as "soul" if you want. The vision is the artist. It is the five senses of a person. And that cannot be teached. In all these year I've been a art teacher (14 years now) I truly believe that. You can show some tools, give some tips and teach some tricks, but if that student don't have the vision... he/she won't be an artist. He/she might master the tecnique of watercolours beautifully - but there is something that will be missing.
Of course Art School and college can open your mind, show you new things that might make you think different, but it won't make you feel the world like an artist does, to see things like that. That cannot be taught. Otherwise the world would be full of Picassos, Michelangelos and Da Vincis. But they were
unique in their way of thinking and execution. As every artist is. But you can't learn that, you can only expand something you already got in you. But most of people cannot identify that tiny little thing that lies within and that's the problem. Unless you do that, you cannot expand it and you will be an incomplete artist.

Fell, smell, touch, hear, see, think - then use tecniques to turn all that in a piece. Using concepts, thinking about compositions, colours. Or even without thinking. That is to be an artist and I don't believe you can teach that.

..::A DRAGON YEAR::..

Fri Jan 6, 2012, 5:58 AM

  • Reading: 'A Song of Ice and Fire' by George R R Martin
  • Watching: The Tatami Galaxy
  • Playing: dead

So that's it: a Dragon Year.

I've been waiting for this one for some time. Everybody knows I love dragons: I design them, I paint them, I buy books about them, I collect them. They are the creatures I love the most and I'm not sure I can explain why. They are fierce, strong, they can be evil, they can be good, they can have all colours you want, they can live in our dreams, they can really come alive - it's up to you.

For the Chinese, a Dragon Year is an intense one. For the good and for the bad. In ancient China, the celestial Dragon represents an emperor and  power. Today, it  is the ultimate auspicious symbol signifying success and happiness. I believe for its nature this wil be a year that we won't control. It is beyond our powers as human beings. The Dragon will follow its way and do whatever it wants. And for us will be left the choice of living with it - take its risks, opportunities, learn from misfortune and make it better - or to moan and blame destiny or Gods.

And I've been waiting for it. I want to check if I'm prepared to take whatever is offered to me and make my best moves. And I will do it. Hope you all will do it too.

Let's change the world, shall we?

:iconsnowballrightplz:

I don't like New Year's  Eve much.... But I do love Christmas. It's the main holyday I wait for the whole year.

It's not about the gifts, not at all... It's about getting the family together, about hold the people you love. I wish everyday could be like Christmas.

I set my Christmas Tree and start to think about thing I can buy for those who I love, something really special not because I ought to, but because I want to. For me it's time to take a break and think a little bit more about those who I do care about. Life can be such a crazy rollercoaster and Christmas is the time I feel free of all that.

I try to be a good person the whole year, not only at Christmas time. I do believe in the Action/Reaction Law (not the third Newton's Law! I mean, that too, but not in this case!) : you get what you deserve from life based on your own action in life. But Christmas.... Christmas will always be a differente thing. It is Magnificent. It doen't matter it is Jesus Birthdays or a Mitra cult: it means something since a time we can even imagine.

For me it's special because since I was a kid the whole family was together to eat (oh, great food indeed!!!!) and have fun and simply be together, all together. I do believe in Santa, since he is the personification of all good things humans can create and he's also the spirit of this season, when we wish good not just for us, but to others too. Santa talks directly to your heart, and that's what makes him so ... true.

And my wishlist for Santa this year is a short one, I believe! If you see him or talk to him, please tell him I want:

1 - an Uzi - yes, that's right. It's always on the top of my list, but he never brings me that! It's all part of a plan, c'mon! He doens't get it! World will improve if I get on of those....

2 - Hiroshige book - of course

3 - Copics lol

4 - Margaret Mee book ¬¬ I need that!

Hum... and chocolates, mainly.... I guess \o/

I hope you all have an great Christmas!

I was chating with some some students the other day and we are talking about Brazil. What to like, What not to....

One thing I really like in Brazil are setts for pave roads. We call it paralelepipedo and it is one of the longest words in Portuguese.

A sett, usually the plural setts and in some places called a Belgian block (often incorrectly called "cobblestone"), is a broadly rectangular quarried stone used originally for paving roads, today a decorative stone paving used in landscape architecture.

Anyway, it was used to pave streets surface (untill very recently. actually) and  it's being replaced by asphalt now. But we still have a lot of these kind of streets surface here, specially at small cities. And they are not used for decorative purposes, not at all... It is just the way it was, since asphalt is a very expensive thing for small cities to afford.

And I love it.

I love the sound of it when you're driving on it.

I love the rain on it, the way the stones shine and get slippery.

I love the way flood flows through it after the rain and the sound it makes...

And this is something i love about my country... Do you have something special you like in your country? Tell me tell me! I wanna know!

..::Teaching is Love::..

Journal Entry: Fri Aug 5, 2011, 11:37 AM
Hello there!

Once again here I am with this subject... lol

Things happen and make me wonder... Do teaching really matter? In a time that Google knows it all I think if the teachers work is really something you cannot live without.

Being a teacher is something I never wanted for my life and still is something I cannot drop. I love it, I'm addicted to it. And still, many times it makes me angy, mad and even sad.

I know I'll sound a little like an old lady, but I feel it like it's true: internet just ruined everything: now people want it all and want it fast. People want to learn fast. How do you do that? How do you do it without a lot of practice and love and caring? I don't know. And students want to learn fast, to finish fast. They do not have the patience that a good piece of work demands. Oh, yes, I've been there! And I'm ashamed of myself: I must have driven my teachers crazy. Sorry, masters...

But I try to make those little grasshoppers to understand it. Sometimes it does not worth it. They quit, give up and leave with no regrets. I get a little upset, but I know those who will make it to the end and those who won't. So, no big surprises in there. And sometimes, oh, man sometimes they just take your breathway showing you something amazing and you think "it can't be possible that I was the one who led this student to that path". But it is.

Best part of being a teacher, specially an Art Teacher, is to see your students work and feel prode of it. Feel prode for them. I never get tired of it. I always say I can't live without my students. And I mean it: the moment I step in the classroom and start a class all the world outside vanishes and I'm happy. And I learn so much from them. New ideas, a new point of view....

The sad part is when they leave - and they always leave. It's like you have a hole in your chest somewhere and you can't find out where or why. It will pass, New students will come. But the old ones, those who you have really touched deep in their hearts, those will be back to you, They will be back with a lot of news, achievements. And you will be proud of them again. And you wiil also learn from them again.

I want to salute every teacher and every student who is reading these lines. No matter how much Google knows, it will never be able of teaching like a teacher, it will never be able to touch someone's soul.

A huge hug for my students and also former students.

STILL, I have good news: I'm just invited to join a comic competition with ©Kelly at Potluck.com!!! Please check the strip here: [link]
Yay!!!

Hi, guys!!! This is more an apology and an outflow than a journal... But here it goes!

I usually don't matter about art stealing and that kind of stuff, I think if your work is on internet it will be stolen, and you wo'nt even notice most of times.

I don't mind people using my work on the net if they are not making money with it (if you're using my work and making money with it, I will hunt you down without mercy! Hunt you down all nightmare long! lol). But, c'mon, please PUT MY NAME on it! Gimme the credits for the image!!!!

And now comes the apology: dear watchers, I'm trully sorry but I had to put a watermark on everysingle piece on my gallery, since I do want the credit for my own work. I usually allow full download of the images, but you can't download it anymore. If you want the full image for any purpouse, please let me know. Maybe I can help you ;) I know the watermark won't stop anyone, even me can take it out using Photoshop. But I'll do my part.

Only exception: Kelly's strips. You still can download the strips, and no watermark for them. It's a copyrighted character, and there's my name all over the place... And even so....

I know people will keep stealing artwork from internet. But at least now they will have some trouble ;)

Thank you, guys! Sorry for the watermarks, I hate them too!!!!

..::Can't start a fire Without a Spark ::..

Journal Entry: Fri Apr 15, 2011, 11:31 AM

You can´t start a fire without a spark.

I wanna change my clothes, my art, my hair, my face. I"m feeling I can do better about everything in my life. I do bother about people who's just sat and whining. They are unhappy about their lives but they do nothing. Or they are happy. But the world is so huge and it has so many things to be done...

You sit around getting older and something is waiting for you otside. Aren't you going to get it?

You can´t start a fire sitting ´round crying or worrying about you life and about how the world is like these days. I got something here inside that tells me to go on, to never let it go, never surrender. It's my gipsy heart, always hungry for more. And this gun here isn't for hire. I'll take my shots. ;)

Be a sparkle: You can´t start a fire without a spark.

Think about it.

..::St Patrick and More::..

Journal Entry: Sun Mar 13, 2011, 7:03 AM

Hello, evreyone. Long time no see.
I've been working hard these days, so I couldn't upload a proper journal...
St Patrick's Day is coming and it's going to be a little sad this year. The earthquake in Japan made everyone (at least most of people, I believe) sad, and made me very sad. I'm a manga artist and it's so sad to see that people who have already suffered so much in History suffering all over again, too many things destroyed, too many lives. I pray for them to get back together again, and I know they will, they are a very prepared and organized people. I believe if it was in Brazil there would be much more deaths and pain.

If you want to help and don't know how, just check out the dA news, there is a lot of articles, here's one: [link] and here a list of Magaká in Japan who is missing and who's safe: [link]

Irish Prayer

May God give you...
For every storm, a rainbow,
For every tear, a smile,
For every care, a promise,
And a blessing in each trial.
For every problem life sends,
A faithful friend to share,
For every sigh, a sweet song,
And an answer for each prayer.

..::A Matter of Weather::..

Journal Entry: Fri Jan 28, 2011, 2:53 AM

The fan is on but it seems it's not working at all. I can sense the dense air around me and around the entire house. The cat is laid down on the bed and she seems to not find a got position to sleep. I couldn't sleep well. The hot, mosquitoes, the noise of the fan and the wind it made all night blowing on my swety skin is now giving me chillings. My head aches. It's not gonna be good.
I woke up before the clock alarm rings, the noise at the street can let me sleep a little while.
I hate the city most of times. Its noisy and smoky trucks, horns, stupid dogs barking while walking with their stupid humans. I step out of home and head to work. Maybe on the streets the weather is better. It's not. It's as hot as it was inside the house. And I can even listen the sweet sound of the waking wild parrots upon the trees: a bloody truck is making too much noise while downloads litres of potable water to a building. Seriously. Can't understand why. Maybe just to make more noise and prevent me and others to sleep.
I walk a little more and a cool breeze touches my face. I close my eyes and think at least it could rain. The sky is so beautifiul I almost smile. But it's too hot to think, and I'm already in a dark mood. I drag myself to work.
No, I'm not a tropical person, I'm not a city person. There is a brazilian song singed by the remarkable Elis Regina that goes like these: " I want a house in the countryside where I can plant my friends, my albuns and books and nothing else". Guess I want that too.
Hey, God: turn the city off. Turn the air conditioner on.  I'd like to have a bubble to live inside these days.

Interview

A beautiful watercolour can soft the hardest heart. Watercolours are full of life and delicacy, even if it's one of the most difficult medium to work with. Dear readers, meet ~GreeGW - the watercolours guy!

T - Talk a little about yourself... Where do you live, where you were born?
G - I live in Warsaw the capital of Poland. I was born here in 1983.I am architect and teacher in private school of art. I have been teaching people since 2003.
T - You are a traditional artist who make wonderful works using watercolours. How is the process you usually do to get a piece done? Do you draw from life or do you take pictures of the subjects?
G - In summer time I usually draw from life. I think this is the best way to learn something new , to achieve better skills.
But in winter time it is hard to go outside and paint ( water frezzes :) ) so I take my photos that I have made earlier and I paint from them.
T - What material/brands do you use?
G - I usually use Windsor&Newton Cotman watercolours and Canson and Daler&Rowney papers. My original works are usualy 50x70 cm and 50x40 cm.
T - For how long you've been working with watercolours?
G - I think that I started to use watercolours when I was 12 but then I didin't know how to use it properly. I learned how to use it around 2002 so it will be nearly 9 years.
T - In your opinion: What's is the greatest and the most difficult part of working with this medium?
G - Water ! You can control it but never in 100%. I use a lot of water and I think it is the gratest thing to observe how it flows on your paper and creates magical things.
T - Do you attended to any Art School?
G - During my studies on Warsaw University of Technology, Faculty of Architecture I have learned a lot about watercolours. Our Faculty has strong tradition in drawings and watercolours. But most of my skills I have gained from my own studies of that medium and from my friends who also use watercolours.
T - Art is your main work? What do you do for living?
G - As I said in the begining I work as an architect and teacher in private school of art. So this is what I mainly do for living. You can check it on my personal websites : [link] [link] But I also have another passion in life. It is music. I am composer but I have never studied it in any school. You can check it here : [link] and here : [link] [link]
T - Thank you very much!
G - Thank you!

..::NYC & DONATE POLL::..

Journal Entry: Fri Oct 15, 2010, 10:42 AM

Nyahoooo!

how are you!?!?
NYC was great, really cool place even if I'm country girl (??? really?). I just post some pics and I hope you like it. ;)
ComicCon was FANTASTIC, I loved it, it was great! Huge! It's the second in size (first is San Diego's), but I was pretty amazed. So many fantastic artists... Most of them are really cool, really nice. I met Mr Adam Hughes (cool guy! he IS very nice!) and Mr David Mack (I couldn't speak to him! Was so ... emotive...!). Great people!
For those who haven't seen it yet: I've started a donation poll, not for myself, but for :icondeviantarttimes: If you can, please donate. If you can't, please spread the word. Subscription ends on november and it's going to be hard to run the paper on basic groups bases... Thank you!

It has finally rained and I feel good now. lol
It's spring time in Brazil and I believe weather can be more friendly now(besides the hot - no, I'm never satisfied, unless it's cold AND raining). Anyway... ComicCon/AnimeFest is coming, really close and I'm having some excitement issues!!! hauhauahuahuaha! so cool so cool! Can't believe I'm going to see Mr :iconj-scott-campbell: amd mr :iconadamhughes: live!!!!!!! Oh man! :faint:
And I really am in need of some time off. Work is driving me crazy, all that I do people have to check to see if I'm not doing something wrong (most of times I AM!).
Anyway, not writting 'till I'm back from NY (12/13th october), so take care! :la:
